Setting the Scene: Loveland, OH — Last week, Little Miami traveled just a few miles downstream to face off against their ECC rivals, the Loveland Tigers, in a showdown that lived up to the hype—and then some. In a back-and-forth battle that stretched through four quarters and several overtimes, fans on both sides were treated to an instant classic that saw Loveland ultimately prevail, 37-34.
The Tigers' opening drive ended in a fumble near midfield, but Little Miami couldn't capitalize, punting on their first possession. On Loveland's next series, starting from their own 33-yard line, running back Jewel Vorbroker ignited the home crowd by reversing field on a counter play and bursting 57 yards to the Little Miami 10. Three plays later, QB Sean Clore connected with WR Cooper Williams for the game's first touchdown, putting Loveland up 7-0 late in the first quarter.
In the second, Loveland leaned heavily on their triple-option attack, chewing clock on a 17-play drive. But it ended without points after a 41-yard field goal attempt drifted wide right.
Little Miami, meanwhile, broke through after a pre-snap penalty backed them up to 1st-and-15 from their own 15. QB Camden Fox launched a deep ball to WR Lucas Basta for a 47-yard gain, their first major strike of the night. Thirteen plays later, Fox hit RB Andrew Trapp, who had leaked out into the flat and walked into the end zone on 3rd-and-10 from the Loveland 10. A penalty on the PAT moved the ball half the distance to the goal, prompting Coach Mahon to go for two. The try came up just short, and the Panthers trailed 7-6 at halftime.
Little Miami received the second-half kickoff but was stopped on fourth-and-three from the Loveland 45. Three plays later, Loveland fumbled the ball back. Fox found Basta again on second-and-12, this time for a 27-yard gain to the Loveland 5. On the next play, Trapp took a direct snap and punched it in, giving LMHS their first lead at 13-7.
Momentum was shifting in favor of the Panthers as both teams traded punts. But early in the fourth quarter, Tiger RB Chase Martin reversed course on a run designed to go right and found daylight to the left, scoring from 20 yards out to put Loveland back in front, 14-13.
The lead didn't last. On the very next play, Fox hit WR Carter Stewart for a huge 45-yard gain. Six plays later, Fox went back to Stewart—this time for a diving 13-yard touchdown. Mahon again dialed up a two-point try, this one a toss-back to the quarterback, and Fox found Trapp to extend the lead to 21-14.
With time winding down, Loveland once again turned to their methodical triple-option. They marched down the field and tied the game on a second touchdown pass to Cooper Williams, sending the contest into overtime tied at 21.
Overtime Madness: OT 1: Little Miami scored first, with Lucas Basta breaking free around the left side to make it 28-21. Loveland answered with Vorbroker's second TD to tie it at 28.
OT 2: After a penalty stalled the Panthers, kicker Cade Wojnicz calmly drilled a 38-yard field goal to give LMHS a 31-28 lead. Loveland's Henry Decker responded with a clutch 34-yard FG to keep the game alive, 31-31.
OT 3: Now deep into the night and with over 160 plays run, Wojnicz came through again, knocking through a field goal on fourth-and-10 to put Little Miami ahead, 34-31. But it wasn't to be for the Panthers. Loveland, bruised but determined, drove to the 1-yard line and powered it in for the game-winning touchdown. As the final whistle blew, the Tigers' student section rushed the field in celebration, capping off an unforgettable 37-34 Tiger victory.
Next Up: Senior Night at Little Miami. The Panthers look to regroup as they return home for Senior Night against the struggling Milford Eagles (1-7), who are hoping to snap a six-game losing streak. Kickoff is set for Friday night a 7 PM in Morrow.
